he first thing Shawna did when she walked over onto the beach was peel out of her oversized sweater, even though the air was chilly. Under her bulky sweater she wore a magenta-and-turquoise bikini top. Christy could tell it was thickly padded to make Shawna look like she had more on top than she really did.
The padding, the topâs bright colors, and her hip-hugger shorts made her the center of attention for the five guys who had gathered down by the water.
âItâs still pretty cold, donât you think?â Christy hoped Shawna would put her sweater back on. Not just for the chill factor but as a kindness to the guys who didnât need to have her parading her blossoming young body around in front of them.
âIt doesnât feel cold to me,â Shawna said. âThe beaches in the Northwest where I live are much colder than this. Iâm ready to go in the water.â She unsnapped her shorts and shimmied out of them. The bottom of her bikini covered her in theory, but when she walked, she left very little to the imagination.
Christy tried to think fast.
Should I say something? I always felt so uncomfortable when it was up to me to say something to the girls in the youth group.
Todd was focused on untangling the ankle strap on his surfboard and hadnât noticed Shawna. The other guys seemed to be doing their best to not take in a full view of Shawna. Two of them were already heading toward the water.
âAre we all going in the water now?â Shawna asked. âBrennan, are you going surfing now?â
Brennan glanced at Christy with a look of help! He then looked back at his board, rubbing his thumb over the side as if trying to smooth out a ding. âYeah, probably pretty soon.â He sounded about as noncommittal as he could.
âHow about if we let the guys go out by themselves now?â Christy suggested. âThen maybe Todd could take you out in a little while.â
Shawna stood on the blanket with her legs slightly apart and her hands on her hips. Her posture reminded Christy of cheerleading poses she had learned when she was trying out in high school. Shawna didnât look like a cheerleader, though. She was more of a female version of Peter Pan.
âIâm really looking forward to learning how to surf.â Shawnaâs gaze was fixed on Brennan. âWhichever one of you guys wants to teach me is fine with me.â
âLater.â Todd grinned at Christy and headed for the water with his newest surfboard under his arm. It was his trademark color of orange.
Brennan quickly fell into step with Todd. The two of them hustled down to the water and dove right in. Christy knew that Todd liked to feel the water all at once whenever he got in the ocean, and thatâs why he went in headfirst and came bobbing up like a dolphin.
As Christy watched him, she felt a ruffle of sadness. When he popped up out of the water and
